1. ‘be supposed to’는 여러 가지 예축된 상황에서 씁니다.
   Use ‘be supposed to’to talk about different kinds of expectations:

a. 규칙들 rules
You’re not supposed to park over here. There’s a NO PARKING sign.
여기에 주차하시면 안됩니다. 주차금지 푯말이 있습니다.

b. 습관들 customs (usual ways of doing things)
The groom is supposed to arrive at the ceremony early. It’s a custom.
신랑은 예식에 일찍 도착해야 합니다. 관습이에요.

c. 예측들 predictions
The weather forecast says it’s supposed to rain tomorrow.
일기예보가 내일 비가 올 것이라고 했습니다.

d. 전해들은 말 hearsay (what everyone says)
The beaches in Aruba are supposed to be beautiful. Everyone say so.
아루바에 있는 해변들은 아름답다고 합니다. 모두가 그러던데요.

e. 계획이나 사전협의들 plans or arrangements
Let’s hurry. We’re supposed to pick up the Smiths at 6:00.

2. ‘be supposed to’는 단순 현재나 단순 과거시제에서만 사용합니다.
   Use ‘be supposed to’only in the simple present or the simple past.

a. 단순 현재는 현재시제나 미래 시제를 나타낼 때 사용합니다.
Use the simple present for the present or the future.

The bride is supposed to be here now.

지금 신부가 도착했어야 한다. 
I‘m supposed to be at the wedding rehearsal tomorrow.

나는 내일 결혼식 리허설을 하기로 되어 있어. 

I will be supposed to be ... (X)

 

 

 

b. 과거에 예상했던 일에 대해서는 be동사의 단순 과거형을 씁니다.
Use the simple past for past expectations.

 

example) They were supposed to be there by 9:00, so they took a taxi.

 

※‘Was/were supposed to’ 와 ‘was/were going to’ 두 뜻은 비슷한 의미를 가집니다.

‘Was/were supposed to’ and ‘was/were going to’ can have similar meanings. 

 

example)

The show was going to start at 8:00.

The show was supposed to start at 8:00.

 

 

※ ‘Was/were supposed to’ 와 ‘was/were going to’는 ‘일어났어야 할 일이 일어나지 않았을 때’ 씁니다.

‘ We often use ‘was/were supposed to’ or ‘was/were going to’ when something we expected to happen didn’t happen.

 

 

Carl was supposed to get here at noon, but his train was late.
