* a/an 셀 수 있는 명사가 1개일 때

* the는 청자와 화자가 모두 이야기하고 있는 셀 수 있는 명사에 대해 알고 있을 때, 앞에서 한 번 언급 했을 때.

 

 

 

1. Indefinite article 부정관사 a, an

    : 정해지지 않은 일반적인 셀 수 있는 명사 1개를 가리키는 말 앞에 붙입니다. 

 

1. with professions 직업 등 보통명사
 - I’m a teacher.
 -She’s an architect.

 

2. with some expressions of quantitiy 수량 형용사 앞

- a pair of shoes
- a few / a little
- a couple of week

 

3. 감탄문에서 in exclamations with “what + count noun” 
- What a beautiful day!
- What a wonderful world!

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Definite article 정관사 the

: 정해진 규칙이 있어서 "the"를 꼭 붙여야 하는 경우가 있다. 

 

1. oceans, rivers, hotels, theaters, museums, newspapers
- the Metropolitan Museum
- The Washington Times
- the Atlantic

 

2. 세상에 하나뿐인 것 앞 there’s only one of something
- the sun
- the president
- the government

 

3. 최상급 앞 with superlative adj.
- the richest man
- the oldest woman

 

4. 악기 앞 before musical instrument 

- the guitar 

- the piano

- the violin 

 

5. Radio 앞 

- I listen to the radio.

 

 

3. No articles (X) 

 

1. 복수명사, 셀 수 없는 명사 Plural nouns, non-countable nouns

 

2. 고유명사 : countries, towns, streets, languages, magazines, meals, airports, stations, and mountains

 

3. 몇몇의 장소 및 교통수단 before some places, with some of transportation. 

at home, in bed, at work, at school, by bus, by plane, by car, by train, on foot

 

4. 명사를 사용한 감탄문에서 셀 수 없는 명사가 쓰인 경우
   in exclamations with What + noncount noun. 

  -  What beautiful weather!
  -  What loud music!

 

 

 

<Note>

국가 앞에는 관사를 붙이지 않으나, 예외가 있다.

* 어떤 나라의 정치 체계로 그 나라의 이름을 대신한 경우
- The United States of America
- The United Kingdom

- The Soviet Union

 

*복수로 된 국가명 (섬나라가 많음)

- The Philippines

- The Bahamas

 

*그 밖의 관습으로 붙임

- the Gambia

- the Congo

**이외의 나라이름 앞에는 “the“를 붙이지 않는다**

 

*문장 중간에는 관습적으로 삭제하는 경우
